Representation Of Disability

Questions

Why Is The Clip Funny?
The clip is intended to be funny because the awkwardness of the situation as the attempt to retrieve his frisky back makes the clip even more amusing when Will goes to try get it back and ends up in a fight with her over a frisbee. Also the clip is also funny as most the people if they hit a disabled person with a frisbee would run like Neil and Jay but Simon and Will stay and adds to the amusement  of the scene.

How Is The Disabled Girl Being Represented?
The disabled girl in this scene is represented as being vulnerable as she has a carer with her and even when she is hit with the frisbee she wouldn't be able to understand that he is trying to apologise and also because they both are foreign the carer will not be able to try and explain to her he is sorry and this is why they try to keep the frisbee.

Are We Meant To Laugh At The Clip?
The clip is designed to make the audience laugh because the clip is awkward and this adds to the humour as you feel bad for laughing at it and this makes the audience laugh even more.

Are They The 'Butt' Of The Joke?
Yes because if this clip didn't have a disabled person in the clip the clip wouldn't be as funny as it is the awkwardness of the situation makes you laugh even more as you try to stop but it makes the situation even more amusing. But then Will takes it back and the humour is caused by him trying to get the frisbee back.

How Do You Think Disabled People Would Respond To This?
Depending on the disability and personality of the person they still may laugh at this as it is a awkward situation. But most would laugh because they are not really the 'butt' of the joke, Will is as he tries to get it back and fights with him which makes the situation funny.

Are We As A Society Cultivated To Think That We Should Pity Disabled People?
Yes I would say we are to take pity on them and be respectful of them as you would feel really bad if this happened to you but this is why the clip is so amusing because it is so awkward people just can't help themselves but just laugh at them.

Representation Of Gender In Luther Part 2

Camera Shots/Movements:
The first shots in this scene are close ups so we can see the emotion on each of the characters faces and allows the audience deeper into that characters story. But not only this it is so the audience feel like they are involved with the conversation with the characters. When the shot goes to Luther it is a low angle shot of him to show that he has the power at this point of the scene but after a while the angle starts to decrease showing that slowly Ian is starting to win the power of Luther making him more vulnerable to do something he would regret. But when the shot goes to Ian it is always a high angle shot as he is in a vulnerable situation with a gun to his head so if he says anything wrong he could be dead. There is also a two shot of the characters to let the audience know the background and so you can see the characters body language towards the other. Next is another two shot of the characters as Luther begins to strangle Ian not to try and kill him but to force a confession out of him and as we see this Luther is in the dominant passion as he is above Ian and he can't do anything. There is then two close ups one of each character to show Luther emotion and that Ian is slowly dying as each time you see him his eyes are shutting showing that he is vulnerable. Luther then lets go and there is a low angle shot of him as Ian is hurt and he has the power over him as he is going to arrest him. As Luther is doing this there is a quick close up of Ian's hand as he pulls out a knife this is so the audience is shown what the object is and predict what is going to happen to Luther. He gets stabbed and instantly drops to the floor and there is a high angle shot to show that now Luther is vulnerable and the roles have reversed. Also the fact that Luther is on the floor shows that he is extremely weak at this point. There are then many quick close ups to show that Ian is angry and Luther is in pain and allows the audience to see that Luther is in trouble. The final close up is of Luther and he looks relieved as Alice has came and stopped Ian from killing Luther. Then there is a two shot of Ian and Alice to show that Alice has a gun and is in a dominant position this is reinforced as when she comes and just says 'Ian' he stops instantly showing that she has power over him. Then there is a close up of Ian and it shows his reaction of her being here and he looks nervous as Ian already knows what Alice is capable off. After there is an over the shoulder shot to make the audience feel like they are involved with the scene and draws them in to Alice's emotions. Then we see an extreme close up of Luther's hand to show that he is loosing a lot of blood and to enforce that he is very weak at this point this then slowly moves up to his face and we see his expression and he looks in pain. Alice is then deciding whether to shoot Ian of not and Luther tries to convince her not to but is still lying on the floor and isn't in the position to do that as he is still weak. Next we see an over the shoulder shot to see Mark walk into the scene and he has a lot of dominance at this point as he is the decider if Ian lives or not. Straight away there is a tacking shot of Mark to follow him next to Alice, this also represents that he is on her side and its two against one. Then there is multiple mid shots of each character to show their emotions and to show that they are arguing with each other. Luther is still on the floor and is trying to calm the situation down but is being blocked out by the rest of the characters. After this there is a shot of all the characters in a mid shot as Mark has said to shoot Ian the mid shots are to see all the expressions of the characters at that point. Then there is an extreme long shot to show the audience the whole scene so they also know that only those character saw Ian get shot. There is another two shot and a quick close up to Luther to then again show that he is overpowered by Alice and Mark. Luther then gets up and there is a low angle shot of him to show he is powerful compared to Ian. The final shot of this scene is a two shot with all the characters expressions to what happened.

Editing:
As the scene gets more heated the cuts from character to character is really quick to show that they are all getting angry at each other for what is happening. Also there are cuts to each character when they are having dialogue to show that they are fighting for the power in this scene. They have done a good bit of editing when Luther and Ian are arguing, Ian starts to get the better of Luther and every time the camera is back on him the low angle shot slowly starts to go to a mid shot showing his loss in power.

Sound:
Most of this scene is dialogue but there are some other effects that have been added in. There is a lot of non diegetic sound as when Ian is talking to Luther about having an affair with his wife some sad music comes in to show that Luther is being hurt by hearing this and allows the audience to feel the same emotion as he does. But when Luther breaks out the music soon turns sinister as at the point Luther does this he does want to hurt him but then he realises he shouldn't and stops himself the music represents his build up of power. Then there is a quick bit of diegetic sound as we hear Ian open his pen knife to stab Luther.  When Luther is stabbed the music suddenly stops because he has lost all of his power and is now the one under threat. We here some more music when Alice arrives it has a hint of heroic bits to it as she has stabbed Ian from killing Luther. Then there is the final bit of diegetic sound with the gun shot and the we go back to non diegetic. When Ian is shot we hear a lullaby tone to the music so it adds effect to Ian's life being taken away from him.

Mise En Scene:
About 30 seconds into the clip we find out that they are in a train station. But the two characters (Ian and Luther) are arguing as Ian has been sleeping with Luther's wife and is using this to try and make him angry and shoot him. They are constantly fighting for power and for most of their time in this scene Luther is on top but then he gets stabbed by Ian is lying on the floor and when the rest of the character come in it shows us that he is vulnerable to everyone. In this scene Mark has all the power as he says whether Ian dies or not so the whole of the scene revolves around him making a decision on someones life, Alice is just following orders. All the men are dressed well and represent the middle class as they are wearing suits and ties etc as this would be a working day.

Representation Of Gender:
Most of this scene goes with the male gaze where men have to fight for their power as Luther and Ian do and when mark does they fight for power too. But the one thing that does go against the male gaze is that Alice is the one who saves Luther and it goes against it as the man should be saving the woman and once he has been stabbed he is the passive character as he does speak but is ignored by the rest of the characters. But this is then restored by Mark coming in and giving the order to Alice to shoot. We also see all the male characters involved as they all come together and fight each other simultaneously as they all have different opinions on what should happen to Ian. Alice is dressed in general clothing like the others and they are all wearing coats to show that its cold.

Avengers Assemble Research 7 Areas

Usually, people go to the cinema to see specific films. Now however people are going out less and less due to economic pressures and a rise of ticket prices. This means audiences are waiting to see blockbuster films when they come out on DVD or 'On demand'. Avengers assemble saw 25.6 million tickets sold after release at cinemas, this compared to spiderman 3 which sold 22 million tickets isn't as a high an increase as you'd expect from such a successful film. spiderman 3 (2007) made $890,871,626 Box Office, no where near as much as Avenger assemble's $1,518,000,000. Avengers assemble sold the most amount of Blu-ray DVD's in 2012 (250,000) and was downloaded 13.7 million times on 'ITunes' within the first 24 hours (a record). These statistics show more and more people are watching films from home, not at cinema's.

This is mainly negative as not only do audiences fail to appreciate the full experience that film makers go through to create in movies, they also deny profits to movie producers meaning they have less money to put into new movies. However the franchise still sells copies and people that may not be able to afford to go to the cinema (employment, large families e.t.c) can still enjoy the end product and show their support for the franchise.

Representation Of Gender In Luther Part 1

Camera Shots/Movements:
First shot in this clip there is an establishing shot this is so the audience can familiarise themselves with where the scene is set. When the two are on the bridge there is a close up of her bag to let the audience know what is in there as it has an important reference. Soon after there is close ups of the characters Luther and Alice this is so the audience can gage the emotions the characters are showing and find out what the relationship between the two characters are. Just before the conversation starts there is a long shot of the whole room so the audience becomes familiar with the location. Next when they are in her apartment there is a mid shot of both the characters to show that they are having a conversation. After there is a close up of her painting but not only this the camera zooms in to the painting to show that Alice is drawing Luther in and it works because he ends up stood extremely close to her, but not only that she is using the painting to describe herself. Throughout this scene there are multiple over the shoulder shots to allow the audience to think that they are in the room and listening to the conversation. The conversation starts off general then after this there are multiple quick close ups of each character to show that they are fighting each other for power and it also shows that it is switching from person to person. Then after these there are extreme close ups of each character to show that Alice's plan is working as it is drawing Luther in. Just after there is a cut shot this is where it cuts quickly to a different shot and this shows the audience that Alice has lost all the power and its gone back to Luther. When a bit of the conversation has gone by there is a crab shot which arcs round Alice to show that Luther is trying to figure her out and watching her closely to see if she shows any emotion which he can go on to try and make her confess to the crime. Finally there are two mid shots one of each character to see their emotions at the end of the scene.

Sound:
Apart from the characters dialogue the first bit of sound is diegetic as we can hear the cars in the background going past the characters and this makes the scene seem more realistic to the audience. When the are in the apartment and Alice goes "this is a black hole" straight the way tense music comes in as this sounds a bit like space would sound. The sound is to reinforce that Alice is a dangerous character and what she is doing is just describing herself. This is a non diegetic sound as it isn't anything to do with the narrative. Once the two characters get close to each other there is background music that sounds like something struggling to breathe and implies that Alice is suffocating Luther by playing with his emotions. Finally throughout the rest of the scene there is tense music to link Alice to being evil and sinister.

Editing:
Throughout the scene where they are in the in the apartment there are things like zoom to close ups to show there is a sexual tension between the two and shows the woman's power over the male character as she mentions sex to him and that can be seen as a mans weakness. Also when Luther takes away her power it quickly cuts to a long shot to imply that Alice has lost all her power and Luther has regained it.

Mise En scene:
At the start of the clip there are a lot of large buildings and flats which shows the setting is in the central of London as there they do not have a lot of space to build only up. Luther is investigating a murder and Alice is his prime suspect. We see that Luther is wearing a suit and tie and shows the audience that he is high up in the society. We see the female characters wearing dark clothing and red lipstick showing that Alice is dangerous and a threat to Luther. Also she wears these things to allow her to draw Luther into her trap.

Representation Of Gender
In this clip we always see that Luther is a step ahead of Alice and this shows us that he is clever and knows how to manipulate the situation  to always come out on top. Although they are fighting for power Luther always has a back up plan like when he mentions her keeping the gun as a sort of trophy of what she has done to try and make her get angry and say something that will allow Luther to arrest her or have a line of inquiry. But Alice does have her strengths too, she knows a lot about Luther and this shows when they have previously met she has studied him carefully as she says that his wife is having an affair and they are on the rocks as she sees that he isn't wearing his ring anymore and is trying to get under his skin. But Alice's main power is sexually she draws him in by talking about these sorts of things to try make him say or do something he would regret. This whole scene is against the male gaze as the woman should never have power the man should always have it as he is meant to be seen as strong and powerful, but in this scene we see that they are fighting for power and overall we see that Luther has been overpowered by the woman and leaves the room.

Textual Analysis In Wire In The Blood

Wire In The Blood

Camera Shots/Movements:
There are many types of camera shots and movements in this clip. First of all it starts at the crime scene as the two characters (Tony Hill & Alex) and come out and there is a tracking shot to follow the the characters but also enable the audience to follow the dialogue. Next there is multiple close ups of Tony and Alex as they begin to argue within each other and the close up allows the audience to engage with there emotion. Soon after there is a an over the shoulder shot and this makes the audience feel like they are involved in the conversation with the characters. At the end of this scene there is an extreme long shot to see the whole area where the dialogue has taken place to give the audience a perspective of the area. In the next seen there are many close ups of the evidence so the audience has a idea of what the character is looking at and then straight after seeing the evidence it goes to a close up of Tony to see what his reaction and see him speak about the evidence. Also whilst looking at the evidence there is a mid shot followed with a tracking shot to show that he is pacing up and down the room as this is what many people do when they are trying to figure something out, also in some shots he is scratching his head so you are able to see that he is confused. Straight the way in the next scene there is a tracking shot of Alex walking down the stairs on the phone to her neighbour asking for a baby sitter this shot is to show the dialogue. After this there are many close ups of Alex and Tony to show they are having a conversation and allowing the audience to engage with them as you can see there reactions. On to the next seen there is a extreme long shot of the house that the scene is set with a car pulling up to it the house and gives the audience of where the house is. Straight after there is a close up of the leader of a gang to give an audience a perspective of who he is. Next there is a low angle shot of the same character kicking the door down this is to show that he is a powerful character. After the high angle shot there is a low angle shot of the other characters in the building to show they are vulnerable and weak. Next there is a really quick close up shot of someone trapped in a car with a cloth wrapped round his mouth so he cannot scream like he is trapped. Next there is many close ups of different characters and we see that they are scared of the main villain. Soon after there is a two shot where one of the other characters has there head smashed into a wall and then a close up of the others reactions. Next there is a two shot of Tony and Alex's son watching TV and it looks like that Tony is his dad.

Editing
There are a lot of quick scene changes to show that people have to make quick decisions at the end of that scene. Also when the main villain enters the house and the other characters ask 'where's Danny?' there is an quick shot of him to give the audience an insight of what has happened and could be expanded on in future episodes. The scenes are fast paced and change a lot and are quite short too as all the scenes give you a quick insight of both sorts of life of being a police officer and a criminal.

Sound
There is a lot of non diegetic sound in most of the scenes  to add a bit of mystery and suspense as when Tony Hill is looking through the evidence to add mystery to the case. Then to when the main criminal walks into the house and is walking around there is some background music to add suspense to the scene. There are some also diegetic sound in the scenes like soon as the scene with the criminals has finished it goes into the TV in the background and we are with Tony and Alex's son.

Mise En Scene
In this clip the woman (Alex) seems to be the more dominant character as she gives orders to Tony and he follows them, also there are the officers in uniform and they are all men and under control by Alex and this is means that she is more powerful and this goes against the male gaze. Also in a later scene Alex is on her own with her son and looking for a babysitter and we can infer from this that she is a single parent otherwise the father would of been there to look after him, then Tony turns up and she asks him to do it and he answer 'me?' showing that he isn't comfortable looking after the son but he does it anyway and this then reinforces that she has the power going against the male gaze. But when we get to the scene in the house full of criminals we find out who has power which is the man who kicks the door down and we see a slight bit of male gaze here as if you want to be top dog you need to fight for this and we see this when all the other characters are scared of him and he smashes one of there heads into a wall. Then Tony gets some power back as he finds out why the boy didn't have a baby sitter easily and in the future could use that against her to gain power and then it'll become a traditional male gaze.

Male Gaze

Alex Gaudino - Destination Unknown

Throughout this video there are scenes associated with intimacy and sex.

Within the first five seconds we see a woman licking her lips like she is teasing a man and drawing them in. This will give the males watching a visual pleasure.

Within the next few seconds we see see a whole body shot of a woman which is wearing a minimal amount of clothing with a short skirt where you can see there body. Also the costumes they are wearing can be a fantasy for men and can link this with being sexy.

The next shot is a close up of her chest as she starts to take her jacket off and you see cleavage. She is beginning to strip and become more revealing to the audience. The women is now seen as a object as mainly there role in videos/ films are to look good and are passive as they are the people being watched.

About 45 seconds in the woman starts to lick the trumpet and makes that object erotic as it can be seen as an sexual innuendo. Also the woman is seen as a erotic object too as the men in the audience will like to watch this because the woman is good looking.

Next there is a group of women that are laying on the floor in a seductive way and draws the audience in making the women all passive as they are the things being looked at but also they are erotic objects too because men to fantasise about women like this sometimes.

Very shortly after the women are staggering around like they are drunk and some men find it easier to have an intimate moment with them as they do not know fully what they are doing and this is once again making the male audience feel dominant as the women can seem vulnerable.

Later in the video the woman is drinking some water and it is going down her body as this makes the water bottle a erotic object as she is trying to tease the men by taking her clothes off and becoming more revealing also her mouth is parted and eyes closed so it looks like she is having a sexual experience. The water can also relate to being sweat and also link to something sexual.

Textual Analysis

Bourne Identity

At the start of the clip it uses a mid-point shot this is so they can follow the character as well as seeing the police officer behind him. Continuing from this they use a low angle shot to get the hand cuff in there and to make the character (Bourne) seem powerful. Next there is a close up this is to see the character emotions and what they are feeling at this moment they do this by zooming in on his face to add to the tension. Then it goes to a point of view shot to show what people are doing this shows people backing away showing that they are afraid of him and he is a threat making him powerful. After this it then goes to a bird’s eye view shot to see the fighting easier, people gasp as they are in shock, music starts to play to add to the intensity. Subsequently it goes to a point of view shot but it is a high angle shot to show that the people are vulnerable to the character and they look weak. Also there is an extreme close up to show what the character is picking up as it is crucial information for the audience.

21 Jump Street
The first shot in this scene is a birds eye shot just to simply see the two characters walk in then this goes into a tracking shot to follow them to their seats so the audience is able to see what they are doing. Also with this there is some music to make the scene more tense as the lighting is low and the area looks rough. Next is a mid-shot on different characters just so the audience knows who is in the scene. After this to a long shot so you can see the entire scene where the characters are based. Then there is a shot of another character when he walks in and a tilt shot too, this shows that he has authority and power. After the character goes on to talk there is a mid-shot to show the expression on the other characters faces and see their emotions. Then finally into a long shot to see the other characters listening to the one on stage. There are many mid-shots of the character on stage this is to just allow the audience to see who is talking.

Enemy At The Gate
Firstly there is a close up of one character to show that one character is talking to another. Also some explosion sounds to make it sound like a war. This character sounds nervous. Next is a mid-shot to see the character walking towards them to see his emotions and make the scene look more dramatic. After this there is a long shot this is so you can see all the positions of the characters and the scenery around them. Later there is then a point of view shot this is so the audience is the person behind the gun and allows them to get the feeling of the situation. After it cuts to a long shot of one of the guards as he looks at the dead body and this adds tension as the audience get the feeling that he is about to get caught out, also there is some music with this to add to the tension. There are a few shots in sequence as the scene ups its pace as the main character has to hurry up but there are shots like long shot mid shot and point of view to see all the characters reactions to what is going on and music starts to turn so you feel like the table has turned and he is now winning the battle.
